How to conduct a stellar interview

While interviews may sometimes feel anxiety-provoking, this simple acronym may help you to stay calm and breeze through with confidence.

  • Smile

Be sure to greet your interviewer with a smile and good manners.  Everyone loves to see a smiling face as it shows you are interested and engaged in the conversation but also leaves a great impression with the interviewer.  Even something this simple can put you more at ease as smiling helps to release dopamine in the brain, which can help to curb any stress or nerves you may be feeling.

  • Talk Clearly

When carrying out your interview it is vital that you talk clearly and slowly.  Our interviews are conducted over a telephone call or via Microsoft teams so sometimes it can be hard for our consultants to pick up on what is being said.  Speaking slowly and clearly helps us negate any miscommunication and ensures the interview flows.

  • Engage

Engage with your interviewer so the interview naturally flows like a conversation, not an interrogation.  Do this by building conversation, holding eye contact and nodding to show your understanding. Greet them with a smile and ask how they are, this builds rapport before starting your interview, remember they are just a person too!

  • Look Presentable

First impressions are really important so make sure to put your best foot forward by looking your best. Well groomed and well presented in professional attire makes a great first impression… we don’t want any hoodies, pyjamas or messy buns.

  • Listen Carefully

Listen carefully to each question you are being asked and think about what the interviewer is aiming to understand by asking you this.  Take your time to make sure you understand what you are being asked so you can give the strongest answer.

  • Always be Prepared

Always be prepared when coming to your interview, it makes the overall process run smoother and sets a great impression.  Individuals who are prepared with any personal details they may need to share as well as showcasing a background knowledge in the company and the job role goes a long way.  This shows us that you have done your own research in your spare time to expand your understanding, which looks more favourable than others who may not do this background research.

  • Respond Competently

Make sure to think about each question before giving an answer, your interviewer will want to hear a time where you experienced this yourself, not a scenario made up on the spot.  It’s important to think about each question and respond competently in a way where the answer is clear and applicable to you.

Best of luck in your interview!
