Handing in your notice

While it may seem like an extremely daunting thing to hand in your notice to your boss and start over in a new workplace, it doesn’t have to be scary in fact it can be the easiest way to find a new challenge in your career.

  1. Address any concerns with your employer

First and foremost, you should address any issues or concerns you may have about your workplace/contract with your current employer. Working late, feeling undervalued or just would like a change? Talk with your current employer first to save you doubting later.

2. Find a job that suits you

So you’ve decided to move – first things first, how far will you travel? how much does it have to pay? what do you like the sound of? The easiest way to answer all three is to start looking. Take a look online or give us a call and we can offer some friendly advice.

3. Tidy up your CV

The best foot forward for any job is with a CV that is tailored for that post.

Read through the advert and the criteria then write your CV. Highlight your experience based on the requirements and make sure you include facts, figures and achievements.

4. Prep work and interview

Make sure when applying to a new job you know some background information (you can find out some key bits of info to learn in our blog post ‘Know your stuff’), make sure your CV is up to date and you have time to complete an interview undisturbed.

5. Congratulations, you got the job! But now you have to decide..

Your work life is a big part of your life and often effects your family and friends too, write out a pros and cons list of your new job and talk to those you care about (armed with information!).

6. Resign with confidence

You’ve talked, searched, interviewed, talked some more and now it’s time to leave.

While you may be well on your way to a new career journey, make sure you leave your old job on good terms. Write out a formal resignation letter, giving your full notice period (found in your contract) and detail when your last working day will be.

7. Oh no they want me to stay!

Remember, you told them your concerns already and they said no? They have now decided it would be eaiser for you to stay with some perks than for them to have to replace you.

Put yourself first and decide if you would be happy to stay under the new circumstances or if it is a short term fix.

8. Your new journey begins!

Now that you have successfully obtained your new job and left your previous job respectfully and on good terms, you can start your new journey with peace of mind.
