Being a Functional Specialist is hard work but if you have the drive and ambition needed to make a difference it offers great rewards, and the skills and experiences you learn will open up plenty of opportunities for your future career.

The aim of a face-to-face assessment is to gather sufficient information about how an individual’s disability affects their daily life, and to use this information to create a report for the DWP or DfC. This isn’t a full physical examination or an attempt to diagnose symptoms. As a Functional Specialist, you will combine dignity, respect and medical experience to build a picture of an individual’s health condition and the impact it has on their daily life.

As a Functional Specialist you might be working at an assessment centre or conducting assessments in people’s homes. You will have a schedule of assessments each week and will be expected to complete this schedule along with the associated assessment reports.

You will be provided with intensive training, on-going support and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure each and every report meets the required standards.
